Who are the Lions...?

The Lions International, the largest community service organization in the world, has almost 1.5 millions members in 212 countries representing 45,000 clubs. This organization was founded by Mr. Melvin Jones in Chicago in 1917. In 1925 Helen Keller charged the Lions to become “Knights of the Blind” in the crusade against darkness. Since then the Lions have been focused on sight preservation and other activities benefiting the visually impaired. Their motto is: “WE SERVE”

Who are the Colfax Lions...?

Our local chapter was organized in May of 1928 with their first meeting held in the Colfax Memorial Hall (now City Hall). Currently we have some 30 members in good standing.

We are included in the Foothill Zone which also includes Auburn 49ers, Auburn Host, Foresthill and Meadow Vista Clubs. Our zone is part of the Donner Region which includes other regions to form District 4 C-5

What do the Colfax Lions do...?

• Sponsor sight programs and eyeglasses recycling since 1928

• Glaucoma eye testing since 1977

• White cane days since 1928

• Student speaker contests since 1995

• Camp Ross Relles (camp for the deaf)

• Lion’s Playground & Children’s Park

Participation in Community:

• Colfax Christmas Parade of Lights

• Scholarships awarded annually

• Car Show

• Food Closet & Food Bank

• Fundraising for all High School and Grammar school events.

• Veterans Day Breakfast

Is the Colfax Lions for you...?

Fellowship, fun and frivolity are always important in Lionism. Above all, the aim is to have fun while participating in service events. Our meetings are very informative and enjoyable. A variety of programs are presented during our meetings.

Main Events of the Lions’ year:

• All-you-can-eat Crabfeed in January, our main fundraiser

• Colfax Third-of-July parade on Main Street

• Free Thanksgiving dinner for the Colfax Community

• Light Parade at Winter Fest
